As part of Amman Design Week Dina Fawakhiri was assigned as a mentor to four University and School Students. Students Lubna Al Mousa and Shaker Nsour presented 3 unique pendants reflecting the Jordanian Bedouin’s physical movements while making bread/ laban and coffee. Jewelry designers Leen Faris and Carmela Pipicelli from Design Institute Amman helped both in guidance and the actual execution of the piece.

Amman Design Week 2017 Participation

Our lives today are shaped by an ever-increasing consumerist culture, continuously subjected to marketing tools in the form of billboards and other outdoor advertisements in many shapes and sizes. They are all over the city trying to sell us a product, a service, and even a cause. Since marketing has shifted online, the ‘likes’, ‘hearts’ and range of emojis have become the new currency to show the success of a campaign. “Full Heart” is a still billboard that shows how we now use social media to market and PR ourselves – by showing the world what our ‘heart’ supports and how we would like to appear to others. Only when the viewer decides to move does it reveal the truth behind what really fills our hearts and how empty of a currency these effortless support clicks really are. Have we become desensitized to everything around us? Have we lost our compassion to the point that only the commercial appeals to our senses?

Art in the Park

July 14, 2017 | By | No Comments

Participated in Art in the Park by painting on Dr Khaled Khreis’ sculptures in the middle of the park in Weibdeh Amman Jordan. I painted the Rumi passage: “the soul is not obscured by forms, even if it were wrapped in a hundred folds of felt.”/ Rumi: In the Arms of the Beloved. I used the folds of the sculpture to paint the different faces – which move as you do, and makes sense and are completed only from particular angles.

Painting Joz Hind’s Wall

April 23, 2017 | By | No Comments

I find Joz Hind (a ‘small Italian family-run kitchen’) very romantic. Based in busy Weibdeh in Amman Jordan and run by husband and wife, Luca and Hind, the name literally means “Hinds husband” as well as “coconut” in Arabic. So what better art to create than a Red-Cheek Finch feeding its partner, surrounded by abstract Jordanian and Italian berries and foliage.
